What does the progesterone shortage mean for patients?
The current Utrogestan shortage had left many women wondering what to do about their HRT. Natural progesterone, such as Utrogestan, or synthetic forms of progesterone, called progestogens, are necessary to prevent the lining of the uterus (womb) from building up under the influence of estrogen.
In the absence of Utrogestan, progestogens such as norethisterone or Provera, the Mirena intrauterine device (coil), as well as combined patches and oral HRT are alternative options.
The British Menopause Society has produced a helpful statement with links to alternatives – Women’s Health Concern Statement Regarding Progesterone
