Menopause and the Workplace
Menopause in the workplace is covered by UK legislation to protect employees, including the
Equality Act 2010 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. A 2022 UK Government policy paper “Menopause and the Workplace: How to enable fulfilling working lives: government response” sets out the Government’s response in support of recommendations for employers outlined in an independent report on the issue of menopause and employment.
A UK study of over 4,000 women reported by the Fawcett Society, based on data from a survey commissioned by Channel 4, identified the following insights regarding menopause impact in the workplace:

reduced their working hoursdue to menopausal symptoms
10% of women
quit their jobs due to menopausal symptoms (with reports of individuals being dismissed because of the impact of symptoms on work performance)
84% of women
in the workplace experiencing menopausal symptoms had no one to turn to
79% of women
stated their employers did not provide formal menopause support
Creating a workplace that supports open dialogue between employees and management on menopause and related issues, as well as providing or signposting employees to medical and/or well-being/lifestyle advice and treatment is crucial to maintaining a productive workforce and reducing the risk of costly litigation.
