How Can NewWoman Health Help?
The decisions you take around your menopause, including how you manage your symptoms and overall health, fitness and well-being, will determine how you optimise your life.
Before the menopause, women’s rates of heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis (thinning bones) and dementia are lower than men’s, but after menopause, as a consequence of declining estrogen levels, these conditions become more common, and occur as, or more, frequently than in men.
Falling estrogen levels around menopause also result in vasomotor symptoms (hot flushes and sweats), mood changes, changes in fat distribution, muscle decline and skin changes.
5 million Women
are currently untreated for menopause symptoms.
6.3 million women
are suffering from significant symptoms due to menopause.

I was able to arrange a consultation within days and felt so fortunate to be listened to by a trained menopause expert without the battles I hear so many other women going through. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this platform to all my female friends, it really is a breath of fresh air.”

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) refers to the use of estrogen, progesterone, and sometimes testosterone to treat menopause symptoms. These hormones are naturally produced by the ovaries, but during the perimenopause, (early stages of menopause before periods stop), their levels start to fall, resulting in the symptoms that many women experience during the menopause transition, including irregular menstrual bleeding, hot flushes, difficulty with concentration and memory (”brain fog”) and changes in fat deposition and skin/hair changes.
Declining levels of estrogen are also associated with a range of medical conditions, including:
- heart disease and strokes
- osteoporosis (bone thinning)
- muscle and joint degeneration
- Alzheimer’s disease
The aim of HRT is to replace the estrogen that’s being lost; much the same as we do when we prescribe thyroxine for an underactive thyroid. Replacing the hormones that are no longer being produced relieves many of the symptoms of menopause and reduces the risk of the medical conditions mentioned earlier.

Osteoporosis and the Menopause
Osteoporosis is a progressive, systemic (affecting the whole body) skeletal disease that affects bones, making them fragile and more likely to break (osteoporosis means “porous bone”).
Osteoporosis usually occurs in later life and affects both sexes, but women are at greater risk, particularly after the menopause, when levels of the hormone estrogen are no longer adequate to provide protection.
Research shows that osteoporosis may have a significant effect on quality of life. In a study by Opinion Health in 500 women over age 55 with postmenopausal osteoporosis:
- 77% said osteoporosis had an impact on their life
- 43% said it had an impact on day-to-day tasks, such as housework and gardening
- 36% said their quality of life was adversely affected, and
- 65% said they suffered pain to some degree
Estrogen is necessary for the maintenance of healthy bones, and as levels fall following menopause, normal bone remodelling is impaired, and many women experience a rapid fall in bone density. You can read more about Osteoporosis and Fracture Risk on our dedicated resource page.
